Adolescent Discovered Dead Following False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old boy was found dead just days after being wrongly blamed of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Begin
The inquest learned how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the alleged burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she said.
Mental Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions really were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had not reached out to the family by the time of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Online Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that one 19-year-old encouraged Kai to kill himself.
She had no concerns on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing heard from school personnel at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some boys talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's family landline and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they never receive that message.
Formal Finding
Lead investigator told the hearing he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was released while investigations continued."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his purpose."
